DANIEL DIMICCO, CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF NUCOR CORPORATION, TALKS TO BLOOMBERG'S MARGARET BRENNAN ABOUT CHINA AND THE U.S.

JANUARY 14, 2010

SPEAKERS: MARGARET BRENNAN, BLOOMBERG NEWS

DANIEL DIMICCO, CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, NUCOR CORPORATION

10:46

MARGARET BRENNAN, BLOOMBERG NEWS: Is Google's threat to exit the Chinese market a help to other U.S. companies who say that China discriminates against foreign companies? Nucor Chairman and CEO Dan DiMicco has long sounded off on China's trade practices and has said that if the United States wants to address unemployment in the U.S. they should address its trade relations with China.

Valentino Handbags

He joins me now live from Charlotte, North Carolina this morning. Mr. DiMicco, does this latest public showdown between Google and China change the tone, the tenor of your conversation with Washington? Are they any more receptive to some of your complaints?

DANIEL DIMICCO, CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, NUCOR CORPORATION: Well, first off, good morning and, you know, this is just another in a long litany of transgressions that have occurred over the last dozen years. And I must admit that this administration has been much more in tune with enforcing rules-based trade, holding our trading partners and our trading competitors as in the case of China, accountable for playing by the rules they agreed to to have access to our market.

And that needs to happen not only here but for the whole world because the chorus of concerns have been raised around the world in every corner, of China's massive currency manipulation subsidy and other subsidies they use to help their export economy, which is against all the rules they agreed to at the WTO and with the individual countries.

BRENNAN: And in fact the last time you were on this program on December 22nd you said that the United States is allowing China to abuse trade laws. A few days later on December 30th, the U.S. actually did go ahead and impose duties on $3 billion worth of steel pipe imports from China. Did that change in policy change your attitude towards whether or not the Obama administration is correct in its dealings with China?

Puma Watches

DIMICCO: Well, for some time now, not just recently, we've been very supportive and public in our support for what the Obama administration and the USTR and the Department of Commerce have been doing to reinforce what free trade is all about, rules-based trade, and enforcing the rules against trading competitors like China in hopes that they become true trading partners.

So we've been very supportive and we want to continue to see our administration and the Congress do what's right and enforce rule-based free trade.

BRENNAN: What is it that you're looking for here, sir? I mean do you want more access to the Chinese marketplace yourself?

DIMICCO: Well, certainly the Chinese practice the most extreme forms of what folks in the press call protectionism in keeping people out. But what we want more than anything else for them just to play by the rules they agreed to, which are there for a reason, so that make sure that predatory pricing and trade practices are not a thing of today but a thing of the past. Mercantilistic trade practices were supp

What is ITIL and what is isn t

March 8, 2010 Views

By:Robin Yearsley

As a qualified and experienced ITIL Consultant - I'd like to set the record straight on a few points.

The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is an excellent set of best practices, carefully organized and edited to provide readers with information and structure for how to plan, implement, maintain and improve the service delivered to an organizations customers.

ITIL is owned by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) and is copyright and trademark protected. The IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) is the leading, independent, not for profit, organization that is owned and run by it's worldwide members - to promote and exploit the benfits of ITIL.

Oftentimes, when people first read one of the core ITIL books; ITIL is always classed as 鈥榗ommon sense' particularly by so called practitioners that say to themselves, "yeah, we do that already - so what?"

Well guess what. It IS common sense - but unfortunately it is found all to UNCOMMONLY.

At the heart of ITIL are a set of processes and procedures that any organization can review, customize and configure to their own content. These have been written and enhanced over 15 years from a variety of ITIL/Service/Process experts. This is the whole point of ITIL - it's a best practice starting point - to be considered, re-worked and carefully implemented into an organization to match that businesses needs. No verbatum, to-the-letter-of-the-book, style implementation will ultimately be more than 50% effective for any organization. Every place is different. Every Business is different. Every customer is different.

Over the last ten years, many thousands of IT Service professionals have provided feedback and helped to enhance the core OGC ITIL texts - so you can rest assured that it is THE #1 place to start when implementing strategic IT Service Management.

Moreover, recently, ISO20000 has been 鈥榝ast tracked' through the International Standards Committee to become the worldwide standard for IT Service Management. A lot of ISO20000 requires key aspects of ITIL to be implemented, namely IT Service Support and IT Service Delivery processes. Note: ISO20000 does NOT specify that ITIL is a pre-requisite for certification - but it is the logical starting place for best practice adoption.

A few home truths about ITIL - having observed its implementation in various guises into many clients over the last 10 years:-

- It requires investment in time, effort and people's energy - therefore there's a cost
- It requires capable and experienced people - people who are ITIL foundation and ITIL managers certified
- It requires a transformation programme to own and guide the effort of many smaller, but still significant projects.
- It requires active, senior buy-in. No buy-in - no ITIL. It's that harsh.
- It therefore requires to be understood at a senior level and therefore the ROI in ITIL must be deliberately planned and realized
- It's 鈥榯ransformational' change - so that means people change roles; people have new ways of working and communicating; the organization begins to hardwire the voice of the customer into the heart of IT/Technology

Some further considerations:-

- It's tough to do; people play politics with their empires; people protect their functional silo's; people resist change

- It takes time; to plan, to design, to build, to test; to 'DO'

Essentially you have to change the 'planes engine whilst the 'plane is still in flight - meaning - YOU have to transform the way Technology delivers service - without impacting the quality and availability of Service.

ITIL's all about Service. Not Tools. Not Technology. Not Process. In my opinion, they are just by-products of what the end goal is.

ITIL makes you think deeply about who's doing what, when, how, with what tools, how well are they doing, could they do better, how does the customer perceive us... these are just some of the constant questions that are raised EVERYDAY when you are implementing and running an ITIL based Organization.

These are the RIGHT questions for IT Service Success!!

The benefits of ITIL are many - but here are a few of commonly reported ones: -

- ITIL breaks down functional silo's, gets people and information flowing; gets people talking; all for the benefit of the Customer (service recipient).

- ITIL helps to re-organize IT/Technology to be Customer focussed. The roles, responsibilities, information and reporting requirements all converge to push meaningful and timely information towards the right Customer interfaces.

- ITIL makes people think from a Service perspective; not a technology silo perspective.

- ITIL reduces costs and helps with automation to further reduce cost. ITIL also lets you do more with less over time - avoiding future staffing cost increases.

- ITIL can be rolled out in 'groupings' of best practice to achieve organizational 'quick wins'

- ITIL should be fun. A way of doing things around here with people fully involved and included in key decisions.

It boils down to this...

Will the person sitting on a seat do the right thing at the right time at the lowest possible cost - in order to play their part in delivering the service that the customer pays for - keep on doing it right first time - and improve things where-ever possible?

Holy Grail?

No.

Already being achieved?

Absolutely! In lot's of different companies around the world. ITIL's been around for years!! About the author:

GlobalFoundries Integrates Ope

GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor foundry with a global manufacturing footprint, announced it has officially integrated operations with Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing and started functioning as one company under the GlobalFoundries brand.

According to GlobalFoundries, the combined company employs approximately 10,000 people around the world, anchored by headquarters in Silicon Valley and manufacturing operations in Singapore; Dresden, Germany; and a fab under construction in Saratoga County, New York. These sites are supported by a global network of R&D, design enablement, and customer support in Singapore, China, Taiwan, Japan, the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

The new GlobalFoundries immediately takes its position as one of the top semiconductor foundries in the world, with 2009 revenues to date for GlobalFoundries and Chartered in excess of $2 billion. GlobalFoundries launches with more than 150 customers across the semiconductor ecosystem, with plans to deepen existing relationships and to aggressively pursue new customers. Current customers include many of the world's top fabless and fab-lite companies, such as AMD, Qualcomm, STMicro and IBM.

"The entire premise of the foundry business is changing," said Dan Hutcheson, CEO of VLSI Research. "Foundry customers have made it clear that they are looking for collaboration with their foundry partners as opposed to a contract manufacturing service."

GlobalFoundries currently has five 200 mm fabs and one 300 mm fab in Singapore, as well as one leading-edge 300 mm fab complex in Dresden, Germany. To meet the demands of a growing customer base, the company has an aggressive capacity build-out plan, including expansion of Fab 1 in Dresden and Fab 7 in Singapore, as well as construction of a new leading-edge 300mm facility in Saratoga County, New York. The New York facility, which will be renamed as Fab 8, is on track to begin ramping initial production in 2012.

With these plans in place, global leading-edge capacity is expected to expand to 1.6 million 300mm wafers annually by 2014. This will be supplemented by 2.2 million 200mm wafers annually, offering customers a total of 5.8 million 200mm equivalents.

Gold slumps ahead of floor trading closing on weak oil

CHICAGO, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Gold futures on the COMEX Division of the New York Mercantile Exchange dropped sharply shortly before pit trading closed on Tuesday, catalyzed by falling oil. Silver and platinum both tumbled.

catalog printing

The most active gold contract for February delivery lost 22 U.S. dollars, or 1.9 percent, to finish at 1,129.40 dollars an ounce.

Dollar kept steady during the day session after recovering overnight as investors shied away from more risky assets amid concerns about tighter monetary policy in China and disappointing corporate results.

Chinese central bank announced on Tuesday plans to raise reserve requirements for banks by 0.5 percent as of next week. Analysts worried the move is a sign that Chinese policy makers may tighten its monetary policies as the global economy recovers.

A report showed on Monday that Chinese exports jumped 17.7 percent in December from the previous month.

Some analysts said the plummeting oil in the late session helped the precious metal dip quickly about one hour ahead of the floor trading closed, when the benchmark oil contract in New York lost more than 1 dollar a barrel.

March silver was down 44 cents to 18.255 dollars per ounce. April platinum fell 13.90 dollars to 1,578.60 dollars an ounce.

NIA Says Obama's Words Driving

March 5, 2010 Views
Comments 0

FORT LEE, N.J., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Inflation Association today released the following article to its members:

pandora style beads

So far in early 2010, we have been seeing a short-term bounce in the U.S. dollar, just like we predicted in our December 21st, 'Top 10 Predictions for 2010'. One catalyst for this short-term bounce has been China's actions to cut down on lending in order to counteract their $586 billion stimulus plan, which caused China's economy to overheat and their GDP to rise by the most since 2007. Another catalyst has been comments from President Obama, which include his support of a "spending freeze" and the "Volcker Rule."

The U.S. dollar was overdue for a short-term bounce from a technical standpoint, because more people had become bearish on the U.S. dollar than ever before. The catalysts we mentioned have not changed the fundamentals of the U.S. dollar. They have only provided a short-term excuse for traders to take nominal profits on assets they perceive to be riskier, like U.S. stocks and precious metals, in order to buy what they perceive to be a safe haven, U.S. dollars.

Although for the past couple of weeks, investors have been reacting exactly like in late-2008, we don't expect to see a repeat of the financial crisis of 2008 with U.S. stocks and precious metals rapidly declining at the same time. There is simply too much excess liquidity in the system for this to happen. The next financial crisis won't be a crisis of a lack of liquidity, but will be a crisis of too much liquidity.

We have long been saying that we believe the prices of U.S. stocks to be overvalued. We expect to see precious metals prices decouple from the prices of U.S. stocks in 2010. Gold and silver provide both the safe haven investors sought in late-2008 when they mistakenly bought U.S. dollars, as well as the protection from inflation investors sought in 2009 when they mistakenly bought overvalued stocks. fake rolex Inflation will become more evident to everyday Americans in the months ahead as some of those taking profits on U.S. stocks, seek to spend their U.S. dollars on consumer goods and services. When the prices of consumer goods and services begin to rapidly rise, the need to own gold and silver will become very obvious to the general population.

The current rise in the U.S. dollar and decline in U.S. stocks might actually strengthen the fundamentals of gold and silver. It is now more likely that Bernanke will continue to hold interest rates at 0% for a longer than expected period of time. Therefore, a rise in the U.S. dollar today could be setting the stage for a crash in the U.S. dollar as soon as late-2010, followed by the onset of hyperinflation.

It was just announced last week by the Congressional Budget Office that the 2010 budget deficit is expected to reach $1.35 trillion. A $1.35 trillion budget deficit assumes 2% GDP growth in 2010, which we believe is improbable. This morning it was announced by the White House that they are projecting a $1.56 trillion budget deficit this year, which accounts for a 7% increase in non-defense discretionary spending, not including costs for last year's stimulus package. With the stimulus package included, the increase in non-defense discretionary spending would equal 17%.

During his State of the Union address, Obama promised a three-year discretionary spending freeze in an effort to cut down on future deficits. However, this spending freeze won't begin until 2011 and it excludes defense, education, as well as programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, which currently make up over $60 trillion in unfunded liabilities. If Obama was se
