ASHLAND -- Corey White had always dreamed of working for himself one day.

So after working in various 9-to-5 jobs most of his adult life, he decided three years ago to start his own business.

At first, he started selling model cars out of a friend's barber shop here, just a few blocks from where he grew up.

But then someone suggested that he start selling women's fashion, so eventually he began selling women's clothing, handbags and accessories out of the back of his truck. As a former model, he was able to build a steady clientele and maintain a lucrative operation.

His real dream came true six weeks ago when he opened a new Porcelain Bangle clothing store, Everything Fabulous, in a former gas station building on East 14th Street, selling high-end urban clothing at attractive discount prices. Finally, he thought, he was on his way.

But then, just like that, his dream was stolen. An early morning arson Tuesday gutted White's tiny storefront, destroying his dream and his merchandise. He didn't have any insurance.

"I put everything I had into it," White said Wednesday, devastated by the loss. "When I saw the damage the fire did to my store, I had to sit on the curb. ... I lost everything."

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office is investigating the crime. Authorities believe the store was burglarized and say one of the thieves cut his hand on a window, leaving a trail of blood. So to prevent anyone from tracing his DNA, the burglars burned the store down, authorities think.

Witnesses said they saw three people running from the store after the fire.

Just last week, a popular sports bar on Liberty Street near Fairmont Drive was accidentally set on fire, and that incident is still under investigation. So Tuesday's blaze adds to the Ashland community's discomfort.

"It is unusual for us to have two fires in such a short amount of time," said sheriff's Sgt. Scott Dudek. "One of them appears to be an accident, but this one definitely wasn't an accident."

Nenatte Gage, owner of Supreme Cuts and Styles, a beauty salon a couple of businesses down from White's charred storefront, said crime has been rampant in the area lately.

Several years ago, her store was robbed at gunpoint, she said.

"But what they've done to him is ridiculous," Gage said.

Firefighters responded to a call about a fire at 16008 E. 14th St. at 3:04 a.m. Tuesday. A nearby fire engine company reported seeing smoke from afar and, when firefighters arrived, flames were leaping from the windows of the store on allsides. The blaze was contained within 10 minutes, authorities said.

White, 29, who lives in Ashland, has bounced back from a loss before. When he was selling women's clothing on the street, someone stole $1,200 from him. He soon recovered and kept on selling, though.

As a single father with four children, from 15 months to 16 years old, he's now worried about how he will survive.

"I was ready to have a successful business," he said. "Now, I need every dollar."
