DESPITE facing a recession, we credit crunch Britons are an honest bunch... mostly.

We left three handbags in 10 high streets to see who would pinch them... and who would do the right thing and hand them back. Inside each bag was a purse containing a pounds 10 Gucci Clutches Replica note and pounds 1.13p in change.

There was also a family photograph and a diary containing the "owner's" details and a phone number so it could be returned.

The result? Perhaps surprisingly in these tough times, 21 of the 30 men and women who found our bags handed them back with the cash intact.

LIVERPOOL

IT was a case of two out of three here. In the city centre, two men sat by the first bag, then one tucked it into his coat before heading to McDonald's. They haven't rung yet.

Bag two, at a bus station, was spotted by Merseytravel workers who did call us. The third bag, left on a bench, was picked up by housewife Linda Jenkinson, 59, who chased us 500 yards down the road.

She said: "The credit crunch is a worry but that would never cause me to be dishonest."

LONDON

DON'T lose your bag in London - we only got one of the three back.

We watched a man who spotted the handbag outside Selfridges in Oxford Street cross the road, examine it then walk off with it under his arm.

In the same street a second man got off a bus, looked around then crouched down, tucked it under another item he was carrying and walked off. He hasn't called us.

But in Islington, our bag was picked up by a mystery good Samaritan who took it into Borders.

Duty manager Stuart Anderson said: "It gives me a glimmer of hope."

TELECOMMS enginer Ramesh Patel (above) found our bag at New Street station and a tannoy announcement alerted us.

Ramesh, 54, said: "I think you're lucky no one nicked it."

Bag two was picked up by mosaic artist Catherine Ryall, 53, who phoned when she got home.

But bag three, at the Cathedral of St Paul, was swiped by a young girl.

ABERDEEN

AT Union Terrace Gardens, a shifty-looking passer-by glanced around, picked up Monogram Watercolor Handags Replica our handbag, pulled out the purse and took the pounds 10 note before walking off and dumping the bag.

Our second bag, outside Marks and Spencer, was picked up by Margaret Hall, 56, who phoned immediately.

She said: "There's no way I could have helped myelf to something that isn't mine."

At Aberdeen Railway Station our bag was picked up by a security guard and taken straight to Lost Property.
