WHEN many farmers consider diversification, launching a fashion line is usually not on the agenda.
However, for farming entrepreneur Nigel Sampson the leather by-product from his deer has been used to create a new range of deerskin clothing and handbags, aimed at chic women who love the country.
Holme Farmed Venison, based in Sherburn in Elmet, North Yorkshire, has seen a surge in sales of meat in recent years. Endorsement by celebrity chefs such led tubes as Gordon Ramsay has led to a rise in popularity of the meat. Company sales rose by 165 per cent over the past two years.
Mr Sampson decide to launch the fashion range after the man in charge of making Holme Farmed Venison's deerskin accessories retired.
He said: "The new collection is exciting for us. We've been making deerskin items such as shooting accessories for a while now, but our bags and clothes are very different. We make no pretence of being at the cutting edge of fashion, but the resurgence of leather has meant people have rediscovered its Stainless Steel Pendant merits. It's soft, warm, breathable and incredibly hard-wearing. You'll be wearing our clothes for a lifetime, which is a rarity in today's disposable culture."
As well as a contemporary above-the-knee straight skirt, the clothing range includes a flared calf-length skirt. The company has also produced a range of handbags. The entire collection will be launched at the CLA Game Fair at Harewood House on July 27.
Mr Sampson added:
