A 30-year-old homeless man has been jailed for three years for snatching women's handbags in Coventry city centre.

Trevor Kelly, a Nuneaton man who had moved to the city after becoming homeless, was sentenced at Coventry Crown Court after admitting two charges of robbery.

Kelly, a heroin addict, struck two women during the evening car accessories of August 17, when he was looking for cash to buy his next fix.

Finuala Sheridan, prosecuting, said the first victim was a 54-year-old woman who was sitting on a bench outside the Herbert Art Gallery.

She said Kelly snatched her bag, causing her to hit her head on the pavement and smashing her glasses in the process.

Four hours later, Kelly pounced on a Replica Monogram Mini Lin 37-year-old woman in Trinity Street, and stole her handbag after a struggle.

He was later arrested and said he carried out the robberies to fund his drug habit.

He asked for a further two bag snatches to be taken into account.

Judge Peter Ross, sentencing Kelly, said: "I accept these offences were committed out of desperation, but your rehabilitation needs to be completed in a secure environment."
